The Beaver Island Irish Heritage Group’s various cultural activities offer hands-on opportunities to learn, celebrate, and connect with Irish traditions throughout the year. Rooted in history, storytelling, and music, these events invite all ages to explore the cultural rhythms that have shaped Irish life for generations.
St. Brigid's Day (Imbolc)
St. Brigid’s Day, also known as Imbolc, is a traditional Gaelic festival celebrated on February 1, marking the beginning of spring. Imbolc falls midway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox and is one of the four ancient seasonal festivals of the Celtic calendar, alongside Bealtaine, Lughnasadh, and Samhain.
Historically, Imbolc signaled renewal and preparation, the onset of lambing season, the return of fresh milk, and the first stirrings of the agricultural year after winter scarcity. In Christian tradition, it honors Saint Brigid, one of Ireland’s patron saints, whose legacy blends early Christianity with older Celtic traditions tied to fertility, healing, and creativity.
Our St. Brigid’s Day workshop is typically held on the closest Saturday to St. Brigid’s day and invites participants to learn about Bríd/Brigid, reflect on seasonal renewal, sow seeds for the coming year, and create traditional St. Brigid’s crosses with teacher Cindy Gillespie, a symbol of protection and hope.
St. Patrick's Day
St. Patrick’s Day, celebrated annually on March 17, honors Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, and has long been a day of cultural pride, music, and community gathering for the Irish diaspora.
On Beaver Island, St. Patrick’s Day is a lively, multi-day celebration that blends tradition with playful community spirit. The Beaver Island Irish Heritage Group partners with the local school and the Beaver Island Community Center to host an Irish music concert, cultural programming, and intergenerational activities.
The celebration also extends into downtown festivities, including the classic community games like the shopping cart relay race, fish toss, tug-of-war, and a variety of indoor games and contests which all reflect the joyful, communal nature of Irish celebration.
Beaver Island Currach Club
In the warmer months, the Beaver Island Currach Club hosts rowing lessons on the harbor open to the public, and finishes with a regatta featuring local celebrities racing against each other.
Emerald Isle Irish Féile
One of the most anticipated events of the year is the Emerald Isle Irish Féile. Over 2 days in September, guests can take in multiple diverse, world-class musical artists performing at venues around the Island. In addition, we host Step Dancing lessons, a Ceily, and opportunities to learn about the ancient Gaelic tradition of Mumming. Festival attendees even get to participate in a Mummers performance.
